Hello freshies (or freshies to be)!
It was really nice to see all of you today at the reception. Hope the trip down to (Pulau) NTU and WKWSCI was not in vain, and that you actually enjoyed yourselves. More importantly, we hope that coming down to the school helped to establish good ‘vibes’ for those of you who are seriously considering SCI as your top choice.
Coming to SCI isn’t just about pursuing a degree, or trying to logically deduce what a ‘Degree in Mass Communications’ can do for you. Rather, think for yourselves, how you would like the last four years of your formal education life to play out. Regardless of where you eventually choose to go, if you make the decision to make the most out of where you are, you’ll be set for the experience of a lifetime.
Here in SCI, we work hard, and sometimes often play harder than we work (but we still do well, so no worries there). The coursework is challenging, but as one of our favourite professors likes to put it, “It’s not meant to kill you.” (George, C. 2008) You’ll be stretched, you’ll be terribly busy, but at the end of the day, we hope you walk away terribly satisfied as well.
Sure having a ‘Mass Comm’ degree may not sound as safe, or stable, or predictable, or as career advancing as doing law or accountancy or engineering. But here in SCI, we can assure you that there will no shortages of good life lessons to be learned. By the time you graduate, you’ll be whipped into shape and be as ready, or even more ready, to face the world than some of your other peers may be. (You’ll be a streetwise lot. Here we get some guidance, but we are definitely not sheltered. To put it analogically, you’ll be thrown to the wolves, but you won’t be left to die. Are you scared yet?)
I won’t say being a media and communications student is a walk in the park. It isn’t. You’ll be busy, you’ll bitch complain a lot, you will have many sleepless nights, you will develop an aura of authority, you will learn to question and be questioned, you will learn to stand up for what you believe in, fight for your ideas, and you will learn to see the world in ways that may break your rose-tinted perception of reality.
Are you ready for it?
I hope this hasn’t scared away half of you, but we like to be real, and we want you to make a good choice too. (After all, no one wants to spend 4 years regretting their choice in university applications)
So choose wisely, and for those of you who choose to join us on this path…
WELCOME!
And we’ll see you at WKWSCI FOC 2009.

Marketing Communications Executive

Hi Liz,
Thanks for the post. It definitely sounds great to be able to join the WKWSCI FOC 2009! =]
Just to confirm, the WKWSCI FOC – is it actually the same as the popularly-known “CS Camp”?
I’m actually a CS student matriculating into NTU this year, and am very interested in attending the camp. The thing is I might be going overseas during that period of time, so I will really appreciate if you can furnish me with the details (i.e. the exact dates of the camp etc) so that I can proceed ahead to book my air tickets without having conflicts with the camp.
Would be good if you can email me a reply at my given email as I rarely have time to check out the happenings here.
Thanks so much in advance!
Cheers =]
